After announcing more than 14-thousand layoffs earlier this week, Amazon Games has opted to cancel a “Lord of the Rings” MMO in development.
Former Senior Gameplay Engineer – Ashleigh Amrine – revealed the news in a post online. Amrine says that both her – and others working on the project – were let go amid the layoffs.
The game was orginally announced back in 2023, when Amazon announced a partnership with Embracer Group; the party in control of the rights for “The Lord of the Rings.” Officials say the game was planned to be an open-world adventure, that would give players the opportunity to explore the world of Middle Earth.
Amazon Games Vice President Christoph Hartmann said in 2024, that the studio was having troubles find the right “hook.” Hartmann also said the company wanted to “find a fresh twist,” and make it “different to all the other games out there.”
This news comes as Amazon Games is continuing to move away from MMO’s. Officials also say that while Amazon is moving away from a “Lord of the Rings” game, “The Rings of Power” tv series is expected to continue.
