Animal Crossing update bringing back classic games

Nintendo announced a brand new update for “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” on October 30th, and we’re starting to learn about some of the new features within the update.

Officials say they’re bringing back a feature not seen since the first “Animal Crossing” game, which is the ability to play retro Nintendo games within the game. Nintendo says players will be able to uncover classic gaming consoles within “Animal Crossing: New Horizons,” and take them back to your in-game home to play them.

Players will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to be able to play these games. It’s still unknown which classic games might appear within, or if multiple games will be able to be played per console.

19 classic NES games appeared in the original “Animal Crossing,” including “Punch-Out” and “Donkey Kong.”

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons” new update will be available for players on January 15th, 2026. It’s free for both players on the Switch and the Switch 2, and will have an upgrade for available for Switch 2 players (who own the game on Switch) for an extra $4.99.
