Layoffs at Amazon Games

Written by

Retail giant Amazon is making more than 14-thousand corporate job cuts across the company, with Amazon games expected to face many of these cuts.

It’s still unknown how many Amazon Games employees will be impacted by the layoffs, but the move is expected to impact the company’s San Diego and Irvine offices.

Officials say the layoffs will impact the studio’s ability to work on large projects and big-budget games.

In a memo sent to staff, Vice President of Audio Twitch & games at Amazon – Steve Boom – says that “days like this are hard, and we will be losing team members whose work and dedication have had an incredible impact on our customer over the years.”

The memo states the company plans to “halt a significant amount” of its AAA game development plans, focusing in on the company’s MMOs.

However, Boom also acknowledged recent wins for Amazon Games, including the release of the studio’s cloud gaming platform Luna, and its plans to work with outside partners on the upcoming Tomb Raider game.
