Microsoft Denies Rumours That Xbox Is Abandoning Console Hardware

Over the weekend, online chatter suggested that Xbox’s next-generation console plans were “up in the air,” sparking speculation that Microsoft might be stepping away from the hardware business altogether. However, the company has since responded directly, confirming that Xbox remains fully committed to future consoles.

The rumour originated from a ResetEra post by user SneakersSO, who claimed that internal discussions at Microsoft had cast doubt on previously solid hardware plans. The post referenced post-layoff uncertainty, alleged retailer shifts — including Costco pulling Xbox stock — and internal hesitation about committing to a new generation launch expected around 2026.

The post stopped short of saying new consoles had been “cancelled,” but social media quickly amplified the claims, leading to widespread confusion.

In response, Windows Central investigated the report and found no evidence to support the claim that Xbox hardware plans were in jeopardy. Their sources confirmed that Xbox’s next-gen consoles are still in active development, and that production of Xbox Series X|S units continues as normal.

“Rumors began to swirl that Xbox was planning to exit hardware and move entirely to Xbox Cloud Gaming,” wrote Windows Central’s Jez Corden. “I can confirm via trusted sources that this isn’t true — at least for now. From what I’ve been told, the hardware plans are not even ‘up in the air,’ and remain firmly Xbox’s path forward.”

Microsoft itself then followed up with a clear statement to the outlet:

“We are actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered, and built by Xbox. For more details, the community can revisit our agreement announcement with AMD.”

So, while speculation about Xbox’s long-term direction continues, Microsoft has firmly denied that it’s stepping away from traditional console development.

That said, the rumour reflects a broader sense of uncertainty among Xbox fans, as the brand evolves toward a more service-driven model built around Game Pass, cloud streaming, and cross-platform publishing.

For now, though, players can rest assured: Xbox consoles aren’t going anywhere — and the next generation is still very much in the works.
