Ghost of Yotei Tops UK Physical Charts with Strong Launch

Despite the steady shift toward digital gaming, physical PS5 releases still have a place in the market — and Ghost of Yotei is proving it in style.

According to GamesIndustry.biz’s Chris Dring, early sales figures for the highly anticipated samurai sequel are “really, really good,” with the title debuting at number one in the UK’s physical charts this week.

Ghost of Yotei managed to outperform long-time chart heavyweight EA Sports FC 26, and sold three times more copies than Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on the Nintendo Switch during the same period.

However, compared to its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima, the sequel’s physical launch numbers are down around 40%. That drop isn’t entirely surprising, as digital purchases now make up a much larger share of the overall gaming market. It’s also worth noting that Ghost of Tsushima released in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, a time when many players turned to physical copies due to limited access to retail stores and digital consoles.

Even so, the early results are encouraging — Ghost of Yotei’s performance shows that boxed games still hold appeal, especially for collectors and fans of PlayStation’s blockbuster exclusives.

While Sony hasn’t released official global sales figures yet (and rarely does unless a title breaks major records, as with God of War Ragnarök or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), these early UK numbers suggest that Ghost of Yotei has made a strong first impression.
